What is more magnificent than a woman’s body in bloom? The swelling breasts, the stretching skin, the ripe, round belly, and the little human cocooned inside. As women and mothers and mothers-to-be, we are walking miracles. To grow another human is the ultimate gift, the ultimate sacrifice, and a timeless transformation to capture through the lens.

Pregnancy is such a unique experience – for some, it will be slow and awkward, steeped in nervous anticipation. For others, it will be a deliciously giddy hormone rush, as gentle and easeful as floating down a stream. But however we walk the pregnancy journey, and however we may skip or stumble, there is no denying the significance of the walk, or the potency of the initiation.

As a maternity photographer and videographer, I am committed to capturing the sacredness of pregnancy and its significance in your family’s story. My work is not about performance, and I have no interest in fabricating cookie-cutter stock photos with fake smiles and stiff poses. My intention is always to capture the real, the honest, the happening. I want to preserve the exquisite humanness of you and your family as you journey together towards meeting the little chubby-cheeked mystery you’ve created.

In my ideal shoot, we meet on the beach an hour before sunset. The light is soft, the hues changing from gold to a pearly pink, and you and your family are simply being themselves. Maybe your kids are barefooted, scrambling up the trunk of a tree, or racing each other along the shoreline. Maybe your daughter places tiny shells on your belly, decorating the spot where her little brother waits to say hello. Or maybe it’s just you and your partner walking hand in hand, giggling at inside jokes, sharing a kiss as the sun touches the horizon. It’s the bigness of small things that stays with us, and I’m devoted to preserving that preciousness.

Speaking from my own personal experience as a mother, I can promise that you will never regret hiring a maternity photographer and gaining access to these memories for the rest of your life. Absolutely nothing compares to being able to relive such a transient, tender, and life-altering transition.

Video, in particular, is such an evocative medium because of its capacity to capture movement and sound, which are two of the things that make us most recognisably human. This is why I’m so drawn to detail – the specific curve of a body, the way the belly sits, the distinctive expressions and mannerisms and vocal tones that could never again by replicated by anyone but your own family in that very moment. It’s so very special.
