The arrival of a newborn is arguably the most important moment in any family's life. The joy and excitement that a new life brings is incomparable, and as parents, we want to capture every moment and memory. Photography and video are excellent ways to preserve those precious first moments of your baby's life.
In this article, we'll share some tips and tricks for capturing beautiful photos and videos of your newborn.
Timing is Everything
The best time to take newborn photos is within the 10 days after birth. During this time, newborns are still very tiny, fresh and new. They change a huge amount just in the first 2 weeks, so getting them early really makes sure you preserve those early moments.
Create a Comfortable Environment
Make sure the environment is comfortable and warm for your newborn. A warm room will keep your baby relaxed and sleepy, making it easier to take photos. Also, make sure you have plenty of blankets, towels, and props to keep your baby comfortable during the photo shoot.
Lighting is Key
Lighting is crucial when taking photos and videos. Soft, natural light is the best, so try to find a room with plenty of natural light. Avoid harsh lighting, such as direct sunlight, as it can create unflattering shadows on your baby's face.
Keep it Simple
When it comes to newborn photography, less is more. I take more of a lifestyle approach with newborn photography and I’m not into posing. I find capturing baby in it’s natural day to day environment and how you interact with one another always creates the best images. Keep the focus on your baby's face and features, and use simple and neutral-colored backgrounds.
Be Patient
Newborns can be fussy and unpredictable, so it's important to be patient and take breaks when needed. If your baby is upset, take a break, and try again later. This is why we allow extra time at a newborn shoot. Remember, you want your baby to be comfortable and happy during the photo shoot. I like to just let you do what you need to do, such as feed baby and I’ll capture this beautiful moments as they unfold.
Safety First
When it comes to newborn photography and video, safety should always be your top priority. Make sure you have someone to assist you during the shoot, and never leave your baby unattended on a bed, pillow or couch.
Capture Video
Photos are excellent, but videos can capture a whole new level of emotion and memory. Record your baby's first yawns, cries, and smiles. Video will bring you right back to those first few weeks, and you and your family will treasure those memories for years to come.
Capturing your newborn's first moments is a priceless experience. With the tips and tricks we've shared, you'll be able to create stunning photos and videos that you'll treasure for a lifetime. Remember to keep it simple, be patient, and prioritize safety above all else. Happy snapping!
